Dee Dee Becker

Writer. Story Teller. Social Media Adventurist. Dee Dee Becker offers a wealth of marketing, communications and PR experience which began in non-profit more than thirty years ago with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, American Diabetes Association and Sentara Healthcare (Norfolk, VA). In 1998, she founded Becker Communications, consulting with clients in the entertainment, transportation, education and legal sectors, including The New York Times Company, Virginia Port Authority, and ESPN. As a Facebook Power Admin (goo.gl/Xd594o), Dee Dee’s talents include crafting and telling the stories of health care systems and other industries “doing good” for the communities they serve. Nothing energizes her more than leveraging the power of digital media to maximize online presence, build and engage communities and strengthen brand loyalty. Facebook here she comes! In February Dee Dee heads to Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park, California to attend the 2019 Facebook Communities Summit where she will speak as part of a panel on Crisis Management and Disaster Communications. This is an invite-only event for Facebook Power Admins like herself and other leaders of businesses, nonprofits and interest-based communities who will come together to connect, learn from each other and hear from Facebook about the latest tools and programs they are building. Background: Dee Dee’s expertise is rooted in communications planning, writing and management across multiple platforms including traditional, web and social media. Her background includes planning and managing major corporate communications and PR initiatives for health care organizations, ranging from mergers and acquisitions to program and service line publicity and crisis management. Ask her about the time a Navy jet crashed in Virginia Beach (all survived!), or the time a hospital patient created quite the commotion with a fake bomb threat – no doubt, her biggest exercises in crisis communications and social media. When not consulting, this University of Mary Washington graduate wears numerous other hats: Virginia Tech Hokie mom. Wife. Eldest of six girls. Dee Dee enjoys freelance writing, tennis, and serving as lead admin for the Virginia Tech Parents Facebook group as well as moderator for the award-winning Grown and Flown Parents group. With more than 100,000 members and growing, she is wildly exhilarated by sharing - and commiserating in - the wiles and trials of like-minded “Grown and Flown” parents. In other words, she’s NEVER without an entertaining story! Fun fact? Dee Dee is the oldest of SIX girls, known as the Sixters or the Sis-pack. “We span 18 years from top to bottom…and every hair color from blonde to red! Ask Dad why he had six girls and he’ll answer, ‘Because I didn’t want seven.’” The stories she shares about family life from childhood to the sandwich generation could fill a complete series of books - something between My Big Fat Greek Wedding and $h*! My Dad Says! We’re certain a book entitled, “The Sixterhood Diaries” is just a matter of time.
