Howard was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1946. He practices medicine in outback and metropolitan communities and writes of his experiences. Hi first book 'My Father's Compass' is a memoir. His second book 'Raft' reports on the human face of remote Aboriginal health. His third book 'Carrots & Jaffas' (2014) is the story of red-headed identical twins and the kidnap of one of them.
